We ate upstairs, where the restaurant has been decorated tastefully and in keeping with the old building. The refurbishment of the Royal Castle hasn’t stripped away its character, which is a relief. The menu is on the small side, though there are more options for vegetarians now than when it reopened. Food and service were both excellent. Two courses, a shared dessert and a bottle of wine came to around £105 including my voluntary tip, which seems fair to me. We booked a table and will definitely go back. 👍

We stayed 23/24 Feb 2026, and the only downside was having to leave. The old hotel has been very well looked after, and our room was comfortable, clean and great value. We had dinner in the restaurant, and both the food and service were great. Everyone at the hotel was friendly and professional. If we’re in Dartmouth again, we’ll certainly book here. Thank you.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary and my birthday during a three-night stay at the beautiful Royal Castle Hotel. Room 3 was fabulous, cosy and comfortable, with a harbour view and a bath to wallow in. The recent changes have made it a wonderful, classy boutique hotel. Lena and the team gave us such a warm welcome and made the whole stay special. We had breakfast all three mornings, with a great choice and quality, served by the cheerful, efficient Rebecca. We also ate in the restaurant both nights. The evening food was delicious, and the Mushroom, spinach and truffle suet pudding was one of the best vegetarian dishes I’ve ever had. Sincere compliments to the chef. Thanks to Leah, who served us on our anniversary, and to Joy too. Lena and the team couldn’t do enough to make the weekend memorable. We’ll be back and recommending you to all our friends! 🙏

The brill catch of the day was very good, and the live music was good too. The pub has really interesting decor. But the rest felt a little lacklustre. I’d booked a table, yet nobody greeted me when I arrived. Eventually I was shown to a table that hadn’t been wiped, and I had to ask someone to clean it. There was no table service, which I’d expect for the £40 I paid for a main and wine. Ordering at the bar was unpleasant, as it hadn’t been wiped and was swimming in beer. They were out of the Picpoul I ordered, so I chose something else, no big deal, but then they didn’t have the chocolate mousse either. I appreciated the music, surroundings and main course, but I wouldn’t rush back. I suspect there are plenty of Dartmouth places to eat that do it better.

We had an absolutely incredible stay in Room 9, with a great location and fantastic views across the Harbour. Breakfast was lovely, with everything we needed, and the service was really good. The staff were lovely. Recent renovations have really improved the place and made it feel like a more luxurious hotel. We’ll definitely return.
