The only positives for me were that the woman was kind and there was parking. The room we were first shown smelled strongly of weed. She said it was the new carpet, which I really wasn't convinced by, and moved us. The next room had flies everywhere at a glance and looked neglected, with a curtain hanging from a nail. We felt bad asking again, so we tried to manage, opened the windows to clear the flies and went out for the day. When we got back and looked properly, the whole place seemed filthy, like it hadn't been cleaned in ages. The bed and sheets had dirt, hairs and spider webs on them. We thought we'd cover the bed with the towels and sleep on top, but the towels were worse, ragged, with tobacco and food bits on them. At midnight we'd had enough and went to find another hotel. I've stayed in hostels that were cleaner, and this was nowhere near worth the price. I contacted the hotel. They eventually refunded us, but never apologised and asked us not to leave a bad review. After such a horrible stay, that felt like they were trying to bribe us. People should be able to be honest about a terrible experience. If other reviews had been more candid, I wouldn't have booked. They really need to do better. Honestly, I don't think this place should be open.
I stayed at the pub on and off for a few weeks in 2015 while working on a development a few doors down in Yaxley. John was the landlord. I still remember the curries and steaks, they were to die for, especially John's gammon steaks served on sizzling plates.
The food was all tasty and cooked well. My partner had the sausage sandwich with crisps, and I had the belly buster. I passed them my two hash browns, but there was still loads: two eggs, four slices of toast, two sausages, two rashers of bacon, beans, a tomato and brown sauce. The room was clean and bright, and the staff were really polite and friendly. We had breakfast there today and will definitely go again.
I've stayed and eaten here a few times. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and the shower gets piping hot. The food in the cafe is good value and the portions are generous. It's on a busy road, though it gets really quiet at night. There's nowhere to walk to nearby, but several local villages have pubs and Diss is only a few minutes by car. It's not quite a traditional pub stay: the pub is more of a cafe, open daily and only in the evenings on Fridays and Saturdays. You let yourself into the room using a key safe. For the price, it's excellent value.
We stopped for lunch during a walk and had sandwiches, coffee and cake. The sandwiches were well filled, with fresh salad and coleslaw, and the cake was fresh, light and really yummy. The welcome and service were friendly. The new owners, since Jan 23, have given this pub/cafe a fresh, vibrant feel. I was curious, so the owner showed me upstairs. The newly decorated rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable. I'd definitely recommend it.
