The meal was for four people, a birthday celebration, and the bill came to around £150 for four mains and three sides, with a 10% service charge added automatically. I'm happy to tip when the service is good, but with such an uneven experience, having the charge included by default felt uncomfortable. The other staff members we dealt with were pleasant and professional, which made the contrast more obvious. We enjoyed the food, but the experience was disappointing enough that we won't be coming back. The food itself was tasty and cooked well, though the portions felt small for the price. The burgers came with fries and nothing else, no salad garnish, coleslaw or other extras you might find at a similar price elsewhere. For what it cost, the meal seemed quite basic. Sauces came in tiny pots too. For a group ordering the same sauce, bottles of mayonnaise or ketchup would take up less space than lots of little pots. One waitress seemed disinterested and unfriendly. There was little engagement or basic customer service, and drinks were put down abruptly. Everyone can have an off day, but in a customer-facing job that made the meal feel blunt and affected the atmosphere. When we asked about ordering halloumi fries as a side, since they appeared with some meals on the restaurant and online menus, she just said they were "no longer available". She didn't offer to check with the kitchen or explain further, and it felt like a dismissive response. One person asked to have the tomato and burger sauce left off their burger because of IBS concerns, but both were still on it when it arrived. Maybe some staff need more oversight or training. It was a birthday, and while no restaurant has to acknowledge that, even a simple greeting or friendly exchange from the waitress might have made things more welcoming. Edit: I lowered this to one star after checking my bank account. The 10% service charge had been added automatically, and I was also overcharged by another five pounds. Utterly abhorrent behaviour.

It's a lovely place to eat, and the building is beautiful, but service wasn't great. Nobody was there to greet us for our booking, and our plates sat there for a while before anyone collected them. They'd taken the menus away after we ordered, so I had to go up and ask for one to choose dessert. There was hardly any custard with my pudding, and I had to ask for more. The food was tasty and good quality, though a little pricey. The drinks list was limited, especially for cider.

The toilets were clean, and the building looked really nice both inside and out. Staff were friendly too, so we'll go back. It was our first Sunday at the duchess. Two of us had beef and turkey roast dinners, and another had the Sunday burger roast, which was very nice. The person who ordered a double cheeseburger wasn't too impressed.

Megan served us and recommended the fish and chips and a nourish bowl. Both were excellent, as was the service. I was just passing and stopped for lunch, having never eaten here before. I looked a bit lost about where to sit and how to order, but a staff member, Amelia I think, came over, explained it and found me a table. I'll be back, thanks!

Everyone enjoyed the food and drinks, and we've had so many compliments about what a successful weekend it was. We booked most of the bedrooms as well as the whole first floor, which meant we could go straight upstairs to very comfortable beds when the party ended. The rooms were charming and clean, and we all enjoyed a delicious breakfast the next morning. It was a special family and friends gathering after our son's wedding at The Duchess of Cornwall. Planning the weekend from overseas was a bit daunting, but Danny and Pearl were amazing to work with. Communication stayed good despite the time difference, and it was clear they cared just as much as my husband and I about getting the evening right. Danny understood how we wanted the space arranged and made it happen. The evening started with drinks, then dinner and speeches. Guests chose their meals ahead of time and we pre-ordered, which worked well. Staff were helpful and attentive throughout, with someone always nearby when we needed anything. The next day, many of our guests enjoyed walking around Poundbury, a really lovely community, despite the weather. All in all, a wonderful weekend and some fabulous memories. Thanks to Danny, Pearl, Chloe and everyone at The Duchess!
