The rooms were cosy, and we slept really well in comfortable beds. The sheets did smell strongly of fabric softener, though. On our first morning, the owner’s father hosted breakfast and was super friendly, so we came back for another night. The next day we waited 30 minutes in the breakfast room during the advertised hours, with the kitchen lights off and nobody around. Bit of a letdown, though luckily we weren’t in a rush. This was in 2016, and a lot can change in three years. The pub also had friendly locals.

Dinner was fresh and well cooked, and breakfast was plentiful with dietary needs well catered for. The Red Lion Inn also had a comfortable twin room at a reasonable price, and the bar had a very friendly, local pub feel. Overall, a great place to stay, and much better priced than nearby Stirling.

It’s a quaint bar with a nice selection, and service was friendly. Doune Castle and the bus stop are within walking distance. We were there on a Sunday and were told they didn’t serve food. After a while, we saw other patrons come back with bags of chips, so we went to the bar and ordered potato chips. I guess the bartender thought food could only be ordered from the kitchen.

Our family room at the Red Lion was clean, comfortable and a good size, with an extra bed. The New Year’s menu was really tasty, especially the haggis and blackpudding croquettes, and the monkfish and prawn bouillabaisse was fab. On our first night, staff and locals gave us a warm welcome at the bar and made it great fun. Thanks to Linda, Big Dave and Billy, among others. Hope the pipe band flourishes. Thank you, Jamie, for a wonderful few days and a great start to 2018!

We had the family room for one night. The people were nice and friendly, and the room was good, with an old, quirky, Harry Potter-like feel to the place. We wanted to book for the following week before heading back to Denmark, but left it too late and it was full :(
