Friday’s live music really suited the audience, which was a refreshing change. The fish and chips were fantastic, with crisp batter and no soggy bits, and the tartare sauce seemed homemade from how much dill it had. Good beer too. A very enjoyable evening, thank you.

The pub has some character, with low ceilings, exposed brick, and stairs down to the bar, and it’s conveniently close to the high street. But the atmosphere felt off and not especially welcoming. The garden outside has brighter touches that could inspire the interior, maybe a lit fireplace, even a fake one, or murals on the ceiling. Drinks were pretty standard and service minimal. The toilets were a letdown: the stall door wouldn’t close properly and the sink wasn’t very clean. There’s potential here, with issues that seem easy to fix.

We got some strange looks when we first walked in, since it’s definitely a locals’ pub. But after a couple of pints and really good food, we got talking with people there and had a great time with lots of laughs. Five stars, and I’d definitely recommend it. I’d love to go back.

The food and service were both substandard. Dishes arrived late and poorly prepared, with hair in the food, and there was no courtesy or professionalism. What should have been a pleasant meal became very uncomfortable. From the moment I entered Blakes of Dover, the atmosphere felt unwelcoming, and the staff’s behavior and comments struck me as racist and deeply offensive. That’s unacceptable in a hospitality setting or anywhere. Blakes of Dover failed on the food, service, and basic human respect. I’d advise others to think twice before dining here. #dishtnotapproved

I’ve been coming here for ages, and it’s the best pub in dover. My one gripe is the limited snacks: no crisps, just scampi frys and salted nuts.
