The only real plus for us was the very central location. At about £100 a night, I expected more, and I won’t stay again. I thought the Google reviews meant the place would be half decent, but I was wrong. There are other nearby options at similar prices with better reviews. Sleep was awful, even compared with central London. The secondary glazing was broken, so plenty of sound got through. A fire alarm woke us at 3am, stopped a minute later, and nobody explained or acknowledged why it had gone off. We were told there was parking, but it was “being dug up”; when we returned the second evening, the parking area was full of staff cars. Because the hotel is so central, we had to park a good walk away. There was no ventilation in the room, so washing made the whole place steam up. For a two-night stay we got half a toilet roll and no spare, which seemed unusual for a “hotel”. With the shower mixer tap, the water was either scalding or cold, so a bath was the only option. The TV mirror thing in the bathroom seemed to be just for show, since the remote did nothing.

The food was cheap, and the barman was friendly, but the Sunday roast wasn’t worth it. My chicken was dry, the veg overcooked, the gravy was beef, and I couldn’t taste any cheese in the cauliflower cheese. My husband had beef, which looked like it came out of a packet, as did the Yorkshire. The pub was cold enough that I kept my coat on.

Brendan will make sure you get a warm welcome and a pleasant evening. It’s the best sports and music bar in town, the beer is kept really well, and if you like Guinness, you won’t find a better pint in Norfolk.

The town is beautiful, the locals were lovely, and the hospitality was great. I stayed here for weeks on a few occasions many moons ago. The accommodation wasn’t high quality, but the beer was. I never had a complaint. If I were to live anywhere besides Wales, Downham Market would be on the cards.

I’m a regular, and there’s a good crowd. They have open mics most Thursdays, and the landlord Brendon and his team are always welcoming and amazing.
