We left straight away instead of staying the night. Clunnebeg Lodge felt dirty, unsafe and unacceptable, and it was hard to believe guests were being offered a place in this condition. Yellow water came from the taps, there was visible mould, and the bedding was stained. The room felt unhygienic and uncomfortable from the moment we arrived. The whole property seemed filthy, run-down and neglected, and the road leading up to it felt genuinely dangerous. When we raised concerns, it felt like there was no point: the welcome was friendly at first, but it quickly became clear that a real conversation or solution wasn’t on offer. If you’re driving there, I’d turn off before the bridge and stay at Loch Ness Inn instead. It cost us only about £25 more, and the difference was enormous: it was clean, comfortable, well run and what you’d expect from a proper Highlands stay. Based on what we found on arrival, I’d strongly advise staying elsewhere.

We paid for the place but only lasted about 15 minutes before leaving. We didn’t feel safe, and I’ve never walked out of anywhere before. Would I recommend it? Nope, never. This is very basic, and I honestly wouldn’t leave my dogs here. We’d booked a two-room shed on booking.com, but ours was one room with a double bed, a single and a double bunk bed. The double was soggy and soft as a limp lettuce. There were only basic tea-making things, a kettle, a couple of cups and a toaster, plus a fridge and plug-in heater. There was nowhere to sit except the beds. The bathroom looked clean but was dark, with no window, and the door looked as if it had been kicked in a few times. The access from the car park meant going up a steep, slippery grass bank, which wouldn’t be ideal in any conditions. The outside of the so-called lodges was in very poor repair, and the access road was very bumpy and unmade, passing derelict buildings and abandoned vehicles. That’s when the safety alarm bells started ringing, though there were no actual alarms. We booked it last minute as a little stopover. Faulty Towers looks like a 5 star hotel beside this place. I seriously doubt the 5 star reviews are real, especially after reading the lower 1 star ones, which now all seem very real.

I had an amazing eight-night stay at clunebeg lodge and would definitely come back next year. We stayed in clean, tidy cabins, and the staff were helpful whenever we needed them. They kept the lodge kitchen clean and tidy too. I loved my time there, and even got to watch the Highland games in the village. Drumnadrochit is one of the best places to stay, and I’d recommend clunebeg lodge if you’re planning a holiday there.

It was what we expected, and we’d come back someday. There’s lots to see, the kids are welcome, parking is plentiful and the staff are very welcoming. It isn’t a 5 star hotel, but I’m happy to give it 4 stars.

We slept really well, and the place was a great price. I liked the home-away-from-home feeling, especially hanging out in the living room and watching TV. Sharing the kitchen gave it a bit of a hostel feel, but it was great that guests could use it. The Great Glen Way runs right through this beautiful area, and I hope to come back and explore more. There isn’t a lot in the city, though they are adding to it. Ellie checked us in, and Donna was lovely to chat with the next morning. I hope we get to say hi again someday. We were the Ben and Jerry for breakfast people. We didn’t meet Gillian and Moe, but we did meet their sweet dog Dexter. My one small regret is not having a top sheet. I know just a bottom sheet and duvet isn’t unusual, but I prefer a top sheet. I didn’t realize it was something to ask for, so that’s on me.
