Peace and quiet were just what we needed. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful, with vegetarian options, and the rhubarb and ginger preserves were especially good. On our first night in Scotland, we got such a warm welcome. The comfortable beds kept us cosy, and the gas-lit fireplace gave the room a gentle glow. There was homemade shortbread and fresh flowers waiting for us. Our hostess somehow knew Black Eyed Susan's were my favourite. At around 3 a.m., we both ended up by the picture window with the curtains wide open. The sleeping village fell away below us, and the rooftops' chimney pots shone like diamonds in the moonlight. Magical!

It was a solid stay, though I wouldn't give it a 10, so four stars from me. When we arrived, the gentleman had only just got there. He sent us off with a gesture, spoke briefly, and didn't get in guests' way. It seemed the lady usually handled that role. She was reserved but friendly.
