40 Winks

The breakfast alone was a five star treat. We loved the traditional English Breakfast, and the Duck Confit and waffle with duck egg and orange infused syrup is a must try. Add breakfast to your reservation, you won’t want to miss it. My wife and I stayed for two nights and were pleasantly surprised by everything. The property was stunningly decorated, and George and the management team were amazing. Thanks for a great couple of nights!

We had a few issues, so this wasn’t the right stay for us. The host who welcomed us was kind and friendly, though, and was the best part of our visit. There was street noise at all hours, with people passing right below our single-paned window and their conversations carrying into the room. Inside, charging our phones meant unplugging lamps because there were no convenient outlets, especially by the bed. The bathroom light was very bright and lit up the whole room, so it didn’t work if one of us needed to sleep. We left a “Do not disturb” sign while we were out for the day, but someone entered anyway. That’s not acceptable. We were also given just one towel each, and would have appreciated two, as many hotels provide.

The food was another highlight: breakfast was cooked to order with high quality local ingredients, and the care showed whether you picked the full English or something lighter. The room was spectacular, especially the bay window framing an uninterrupted view of the cathedral. It was a lovely thing to wake up to. 40 Winks has such a distinctive style. The Grade II-listed Victorian townhouse is full of character, from the bird themed wallpaper to the striking lights and sumptuous fabrics. It feels like boutique luxury with a playful touch, never stuffy or generic. The en-suite room was individually designed, and the whole place was deeply comfortable. Just across the river, the location feels peaceful while still being a short walk from the city centre. The staff gave me the warmest welcome I’ve had, and stayed friendly and attentive throughout, making me feel at home straight away. 40 Winks was a whole experience, and I’d recommend it without hesitation. I certainly slept for forty winks, and then some 😂.

We spent four nights here over New Year and felt very much at home. It’s a lovely, cosy boutique hotel with lots of space, friendly people and super views. Breakfast was excellent.
