The guide was funny and informative, and the castle itself is beautiful. The trouble is you need to book a tour to go inside, so you're tied to set times and don't get long there. Since some university students live in the castle, only a small part is open to visitors. We saw five small sections, including a staircase, and that was it. If you want time to take in a beautiful historic site, I think the Cathedral just across the road is a better choice.

A stunning, fascinating place, world class and almost addictive to explore. The tour guides were wonderful, and it was great value. I've made some great memories here. Thoroughly recommended.

The castle looks fantastic from outside and has so much history. I visited today as a birthday surprise, but you must book a guided tour and can't explore on your own. I found the tour a little disappointing because students live there, so only small areas are open, and it lasts about 45 minutes. What we did see was great, and the guide knew quite a lot. I'd probably recommend the tour, but don't expect to see places like the battlements or dungeons, or you may be disappointed.

Durham Castle is well worth a visit, and it's a pleasant place to spend time. You can wander around at an easy pace and admire the beautiful architecture and its impressive historic details. Apparently it took more than 40 years to build, which seems clear from the solid design and craftsmanship. There are restaurants and a bar inside, with food at reasonable prices and alcohol surprisingly affordable for a tourist attraction.

Book tickets ahead because they sell out fast. Russell was an amazing, very knowledgeable guide, and the castle was beautiful both inside and out. Well worth visiting.
