The Old Colliery Stables

The food was great, and everyone was really friendly. They’re so welcoming to dogs that they even made scrambled egg and sausage for ours at breakfast. Highly recommend.

The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and breakfast was fantastic, especially for £5. The rooms are little and basic, but well equipped with a microwave, kettle, toaster, iron and hairdryer. Ours was clean and tidy, and the beds were very comfy. There wasn’t any food in the bar on Sunday evening, but the staff found takeaway menus for us. There’s a lovely walk for dogs just across the road. The only downside was a smoky, musty smell in the room. Opening the window cleared it a bit.

Just be aware the stable room is very small and basic. For the price, though, it’s pretty decent and was tidy, with everything we needed: a microwave, kettle, plates, towels, hairdryer, ironing board and fresh bars of soap. It’s right next to the pub, so there can be some noise, though it wasn’t too bad. There’s no mobile signal at all in the room. I didn’t meet the staff in person, so can’t say how friendly they are, but the woman I spoke to on the phone was pleasant.

We came up north over Christmas to see family and stayed here for a week. It was an inexpensive and homely place, and we settled in quickly. The room had a decent TV, microwave, fridge, cutlery, internet and a nice shower. The heating was great and the beds fairly comfortable. You really need a car or a friend who can drive you: the place is in the middle of nowhere, several miles from the nearest town, and there’s no phone signal inside. That’s not their fault, but you have to walk outside to get a good signal. Lovely little place for travelling by car. X
