For what we paid, I expected more, even knowing it’s a two-star hostel. I’ve stayed in other hostels that were much better. The room was clean, though we found breadcrumbs in one of the beds, and there was an odd smell. The women’s shower drain wasn’t working, and it didn’t seem to be cleaned regularly. When we arrived, all the parking spaces were taken, so we had to leave the car farther away at the Smoo Caves. I’m not sure what we paid for. It needs improvement, and I wouldn’t stay again.

The staff are lovely and happy to have a chat, and the location is brilliant. It’s not especially modern, but the hostel is well looked after, with great facilities. A lovely place to stay.

Ben was hosting while we were there, and he was fantastic, so helpful and full of useful information. His knowledge and attitude really made our stay better. We booked a private room with our son. The place was clean and tidy, though dated, and everything worked well. It’s a busy, compact spot with a very well-equipped kitchen.

The guests were friendly and up for a chat, and we even played a board game together. Our beds were comfortable and had thick duvets, with blankets available instead for summer stays. Ted was welcoming and showed us around, explaining the area. He even stayed past 10pm to chat with guests, including us. The hostel was very clean, and we’d recommend it for the NC500 or a visit to Durness.

Ben was very friendly and accommodating, and there’s secure, dry storage for bicycles. It’s a great budget choice in an otherwise expensive town. Highly recommended for cycle tourists and anyone watching their budget.
