Sunnyside Hotel Southport

Anthony showed us to our room and brought tea to go with the cupcakes that were waiting there. The place has lovely decor, right down to the Sunnyside logo embroidered on the towels and pillowcases. It's a remarkable place to stay, slap-bang in central Southport on a quiet street.

We chose to stay in Southport for our weekend plans in Liverpool because the train was easy and cheap to catch, and the station is a short walk from Sunnyside. We'd definitely do that again and stay at Sunnyside. The B&B is comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated. Breakfast was amazing, with a great choice that included honey from their own hive and lots of local produce. Anthony and Larissa are wonderful hosts who work incredibly hard to make your stay perfect. They also have a fantastic commitment to sustainability. We couldn't have asked for better hosts.

The freshly cooked breakfast was very good, and there's even a honeycomb from their bees for fresh honey. They make jam in house, and you can buy some separately to take home. The rooms are nice, with a TV, coffee and drinks, though our double bed was standard size. There's off-street parking, but the spaces are a little tight if the B&B is full. The guest house has connections with other small businesses nearby and discount cards for a couple of them. The owners are clearly proud of their guest house, and rightly so. Sunnyside has won many awards, including some for the environment. We found the hotel on booking.com, but booking direct is far better, so please book direct.

It was only a week, but I came away feeling like a permanent part of their family. Larissa and Anthony are a delight to talk with and have fascinating interests beyond looking after guests. Their hosting was beyond five-star, with both anticipating what I might need and still exceeding anything I'd experienced right through the end of my stay. The rooms were comfortable and finely appointed. Breakfast was made fresh to order each day, with plenty of choice. It deserves a place on every menu. Larissa's homemade jams are special, and her knack for making them has earned worldwide recognition. When I had trouble shipping my golf clubs home, Anthony quickly sorted it out with the company and even saved me money. This B&B exceeded my expectations and has spoiled me for staying elsewhere.
