The beer garden was lovely and well kept, and the service was really friendly. I stayed one night while walking the coast to coast trail, and the location was great. It's dog friendly too. Dinner was great. The menu is small, which suggests food is freshly made, and the chili con carne was very good. Breakfast was good as well, especially the porridge, the best I had on the trail. The rooms could use a refurb but are perfectly serviceable and, despite what some reviews say, very clean. What's not to like?

Breakfast was excellent, and the owner was lovely with great service. Parking and WiFi were available, and dogs are welcome. The rooms are quirky and could use some upgrading, but the towels, tea and coffee, and toiletries were good quality. There are real fires too. The evening menu could be better and make more use of local food.

The staff were fab, and the place looks picture perfect at first. Could be amazing under the right ownership. We planned to stay three nights in our campervan, but after we ordered fish and chips and a parmo, an hour passed before anyone told us they'd run out of parmos. My husband switched to a burger, and the food came another 30 minutes later. It was okay. The owner was drunk, though friendly, and went to bed at 8. While we were eating, a neighbour stormed in complaining about a dog going mad in a van and was incredibly rude. Later, a cockerel woke us at 3:30 and carried on all morning. We got up early, took the train to Whitby, came back, and left.

We just happened to stop in because it looked so picturesque. The owner was warm and welcoming when we got chatting, and there was a lovely log fire burning when we went in for a couple of drinks. Antony and Sarah, we'll definitely come back. I only wish we'd found it earlier in our trip.

The location is the one good thing about this hotel, right in the centre of everything. The rooms are spacious, but ours was cleaned only once during the week we stayed. Apart from Eddy and Alexander in the smaller bar by Uber doors, the staff were miserable and unkind. No eye contact, pleasantries, or personality. Some bar staff growled when they didn't get a tip, even if they'd only served you a glass of tap water. The carpets are grubby and need a major clean or replacement. If you want a reasonably priced hotel, this might do, but from a customer's point of view it's a zero. Mrs W
