The High Flyer

The staff were kind and helpful, which made the food all the more disappointing. The young woman on the phone was very helpful, and when we said we were leaving, the woman who came over asked if she could do anything to improve things. I’d booked afternoon tea a week ahead for my friend’s birthday, based on the online photo, but I’ve never had one this bad. There was no choice of brown or white bread, and the sandwiches looked like a child had made them an hour earlier. The tops were dry, crisp and curling, though they weren’t tempting to eat anyway. The brownies and scones were shop bought, and there were what looked like frozen, reheated Danish pastries, something I’ve never seen at afternoon tea before. Tea came in paper packets like a hotel room, with a pot of hot water. It looked as if they’d forgotten and thrown together whatever they had. We were so disappointed we left and went somewhere else. The advertised picture showed afternoon tea for two for £35, nothing like what we were served. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The carvery was generous and great value, and the atmosphere was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was my first visit with my son today, and we’d definitely go again.

The evening receptionist was the one bright spot. She helped us connect to Wi-Fi and explained checkout, and we appreciated that. The food was average and the carvery was tepid, which was an extra letdown since we’ve eaten here many times before. Our room was cold and unclean, with thick dust along the edges and visible marks on the bedspread. The electric heater started beeping when we tried to use it, so we couldn’t get it working. In the bathroom, my husband had to remove the shower trap because it looked like the water might overflow, and underneath was shockingly filthy. The kettle was heavily scaled and unusable, and the cups and glasses hadn’t been properly cleaned. Poor cleanliness and maintenance made this a stay to forget. I wouldn’t recommend the hotel.

There’s a pleasant atmosphere, with lovely staff and service, and the location is great. The food is very good, with a carvery every day as well as other nice menu choices. Highly recommend. We’ll be back!
