Gipsy Hill Hotel

We hadn't planned this stay at all. It was a complete surprise on the last day of a glorious week celebrating our Gold, and we're so glad we took the chance. The meal was wonderful, the wine list excellent, and the room beautiful. We'd highly recommend this place for a lovely break and great customer service, and we'd love to return.

The staff were very friendly and a real credit to the company. The maid in the breakfast room was especially helpful when I didn't like the sour sauce served with the fruit, and she fetched a selection of fruit. The linen and bath were otherwise very clean, and the room was huge, well decorated, and had at least a king-size bed. But room 4 smelled damp, and I didn't want to put my suitcase on the filthy floor, where hundreds of spills hadn't been cleaned. The shower head and tile grout had black and brown mould, so I had a bath instead. That was a nice change, but with an early checkout I would have preferred to use the shower. An annual deep clean and more care from the owner could easily bring this up to a four-star AA guest house rating. As it was, I'd only give it one star. The room could use an update, and I wouldn't stay again unless I could verify it had been cleaned properly, not just dusted in a rush. This could easily be four star.

Debra was especially helpful, and the staff were welcoming and friendly. The grounds are lovely if you want to sleep in the garden. The bed was comfortable, but the evening meal was awful. The cooked breakfast was edible, though I've had much better for less. The building is dated and reminded me of Fawlty Towers. The room was adequate, the hallway smelled damp, and the shower room was shabby. Would I come back? That's a no from me. Basiiiiil!!!!

We came for bank holiday lunch with friends, and the food was excellent with plenty to choose from. The grounds were pleasant, and the patio was a lovely spot to sit on a sunny day. Staff were friendly and helpful, and free parking is available. Getting there was a bit off the beaten track because of the new housing estate being built next door.
