We only know the accommodation as pub visitors, so I can’t say what it’s like to stay there. The location is great, by the clocktower at the bottom of Queen Street and very handy for Central Station. There’s regular entertainment, including live music and karaoke. The back entrance is wheelchair friendly, with space between tables and a disabled toilet, though the other entrance has a flight of steps. Service is usually great, and the staff are mostly brilliant, warm and kind. We’ve had the carvery a few times, not the main menu, and it’s been very good. The chef has gone the extra mile with the service. The toilets are a weak spot. There’s a table right beside the disabled toilet, so on busy nights you may have to ask people to move to get in and out, which is uncomfortable. The standard toilets are downstairs. The gents’ is grim and badly needs a revamp: peeling paint, buckets under the urinals and an almost constant unpleasant smell. You don’t expect much from city-centre pub loos, but this one could certainly be better. Drinks are a bit pricey, especially with so many students nearby, although they do have promotions now and then.

The carvery was fantastic when I came with my partner and son this afternoon. Food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The staff were all kind and chatted with our young child, and the person serving the carvery, who I assume was the chef, was especially friendly and went the extra mile. We’ll definitely be back, and I’d recommend it.

The scampi was oooh la la, cheers! It’s a nice pub with a good atmosphere and worth a visit. Seeing a bouncer at the door at 15:00 was a bit worrying, but don’t let that put you off.

The roast potatoes were dry and hard, like they’d been cooked days ago and reheated, and the carrots tasted odd. The gammon was cold, the lamb didn’t taste like lamb, and the Yorkshire puds seemed like cheap, nasty Lidls ones. The mint sauce was basically water, and the cauliflower cheese portion was tiny. I paid £14 for this Sunday carvery, then asked for a refund and got a rude response from the man. Save yourself the hassle and eat somewhere else.

They do their best to fit people in where they can. It’s always a good experience for me, with a friendly, helpful barman, and the chef will make me fried bread if he isn’t too busy.
