The Roebuck Hotel by Greene King Inns

The food was so good on our first night that we went back for a second dinner, and that was just as fabulous. Breakfast was outstanding too, with a great cooked breakfast, pastries, fresh fruit, cereals, and teas. We’re already talking about bringing our grown-up children back soon. The rooms aren’t especially luxurious. Some furniture and pictures are outdated, carpets are worn in places, and a few walls need repainting. Still, everything was extremely clean and the beds were very comfortable. What made the stay so enjoyable was the staff: everyone we met was charming and helpful. It’s a Greene King chain, but it felt like a family-run hotel. We had a fabulous couple of nights, and the age and location add to its appeal.

The broccoli was hard and raw, and the gravy tasted unmistakably like Bisto granules. The chicken and ham pie was advertised as award-winning, but it was half empty, with neat square cubes of processed chicken and no visible ham. The pastry was only half cooked, and it seemed obviously brought in frozen. Honestly, I’ve had better Pukka pies. Nobody asked if the meal was okay. I didn’t see the point in complaining to the staff after the food had been served, since an apology wouldn’t mean much then. Telling everyone else feels more effective. Very disappointing.

Jamie was an absolute delight, always checking that we were okay and had everything we needed. The staff were lovely and attentive throughout, which made the evening feel special. I took my partner here for his 30th birthday dinner and we weren’t disappointed. The food was delightful, and the passion fruit lemonade was the best. We’ll definitely come back!

Peaceful spot, and the room was clean and tidy. The staff are so friendly and superb at looking after us every time. We go most weekends and can’t fault a thing. 10/10. 👍👍👍👍👍
