The Talbot Inn

I stumbled on this beautiful place while out walking Barley by myself and was left breathless. It was busy, but they understood and made sure I got fed. The manager was a fantastic host, though I never got his name. He even brought water for Barley, or as he called it, “doggie vodka”. The food was perfect, and the service even better. My only complaint is that I had to finish walking Barley.

A lovely welcome really makes a difference, and we were offered a choice of nice tables. They were very kind to our dog and brought over a special bowl of water. The food was delicious, with a good range of lighter and more substantial options. A wonderful building and setting.

We left hungry after a dinner with friends, and the bill included a compulsory service charge despite the appalling table service. The mains were basic, not filling, and looked as if half the dish was missing unless you bought a side. They were far too expensive for what they were. After clearing our plates, the staff more or less abandoned us, with no offer of a dessert menu or more drinks. We eventually all ordered dessert, but mine never came. When I asked, I was told it hadn't been ordered and it was too late. One waitress in particular seemed like she didn't want to be there and spoke very sternly. A smile costs nothing and makes a difference. The chap was great. It's a lovely venue, but the service and overpriced meals let it down.

We went out for dinner with friends and left dissatisfied. The interior is chic and the service was good, but the food wasn’t worth the price. The children’s burgers were bitter and overcooked, my friend’s meat was half bone, and my partner’s steak was overcooked on one side. We won’t be back.
