Rua Reidh Lighthouse

We were greeted so warmly by Susan, who was kind and helpful throughout. There was supper waiting in the slow cooker for our first night, along with everything we needed for breakfast. We stayed in the cosy Hide beside the Lighthouse, and the wood-burning stove kept it warm with plenty of fuel provided. The place feels wonderfully remote, with memorable sea views, lovely walks, and a chance to spot special wildlife. We were lucky enough to see a small pod of Orcas. We also looked around the apartments in the main house, which seemed great too. Bring all the supplies you need since shops are a long way away, then settle in and enjoy the setting.

I only came for a walk, not to stay at the hotel. There are three places to park, about 2.6 miles away, 1.3 miles away, and just past the lighthouse. The views reach across to the Isle of Skye, and on a clear day you can just make out Applecross. Visit around dusk and you can see the lighthouse working. One route goes up the cliffs and returns past the weather station, though it’s very boggy. The road is flat and has good views, but those two small bridges are rated for only 7.5 tons. Large RVs and motorhomes shouldn’t come too far down, as the road isn’t suited to them. There are also lots of sheep, so be careful if your dog reacts to them.

The food was unbelievable, and the company was just as lovely. It’s a quaint, wonderful spot for looking out to sea, climbing over rocks, and taking in nature, run by two incredibly welcoming people. This was one of the highlights of our Scotland trip, even though the road there nearly gave us a heart attack.

The dramatic coastline is fantastic, and we had a comfy bed and the best facilities. The hosts were lovely, the food excellent, and the whole visit felt like spending time with dear friends and family. We stayed at the end of July, but I’d come back in any weather. We’ll definitely stay again with our dogs. Lula and Archie loved it too!
