Altquhur Byre

The quiet nights were my favorite part, and the showers were wonderful. The beds were very comfortable, too. There are two guest rooms, one with two twin beds and the other with a queen, and both have private bathrooms. Dinner was homemade pizza and fabulous, and breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Anyone hiking The West Highland Way should try to book a room in this lovely home.

Carolyn made a sumptuous, filling full Scottish breakfast, with vegetarian options for my diet. Chatting with her over breakfast made it even more enjoyable. After a quiet, dark night in my spotless, well-appointed room, I’d have to say I couldn’t have asked for a better first stop on my West Highland Way walk. Everything at Altquhur Byre felt welcoming, from the proprietress Carolyn and the family dogs to the cosy atmosphere. The en suite bathroom was clean, modern and roomy. I highly recommend it as a top-notch B&B.

The pod had a light cedar smell and plenty of room, with a sturdy door to secure it at night and an overhead light. We also had two rooms, each with a very comfortable bed, plenty of space for two, lots of places to charge devices, and an en-suite bathroom and shower. The bedrooms were extremely clean, with fluffy pillows. We were five hikers on the WHW, staying our first night in two rooms and a pod. We ordered pizzas for dinner and ate outside together. We were led past the chickens and ducks, who were eager to see what we were about since we were new to them. Breakfast the next morning included porridge, fresh hard-boiled eggs, milk, tea, coffee, toast, muffins and a yogurt parfait. We happily ate our fill. After thanking our hosts and packing, I played tug of war outside with Aggy and her carrot toy. She won, of course. Friendly, comfortable, reasonably priced, and highly recommended as a B&B stop.

The place was clean, comfortable and quiet, and our hosts were incredibly friendly and accommodating. We felt at home right when we arrived, with homemade brownies, a range of teas and inviting furnishings. We’ll definitely visit again next time we’re in the area.
