Holiday Inn Express Glenrothes by IHG

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel was clean, though it felt very tired. The rooms badly need updating. I was there for a week on business and had to change rooms after rain leaked in through the top of the first room’s window and onto the sill. The shower and sink water in that room kept switching between scalding and freezing, which was scary in the shower. The shower seemed better in the second room. I didn’t try the hot breakfast, but the continental options were okay.

We’ll stay here again and recommend it if anyone asks. Holiday Inn Express is usually our choice for work trips or short breaks, and Glenrothes worked well for us. The room was dated, which is why I’ve given four stars, but it was clean and spacious, with a big comfortable bed and a good hot shower. After a genuinely friendly welcome from reception, we had a lovely, comfortable night’s sleep. Breakfast had a nice range of hot food, cereals, porridge in plastic pots, fruit, bread, juice, tea and coffee.

The breakfast had the usual cooked and continental choices, but the cooked food was lukewarm at best and the coffee was instant. There was only a plug socket on one side of the bed, and the shower control seemed to have about 2mm between freezing and burning hot. For a one-night stop before a wedding, though, it was totally fine. The bed was huge and comfortable, the Wi-Fi was free, and the pub restaurant next door was a good dinner option. Check-in and check-out were easy, with excellent service. Three stars feels about right.

Parking was easy to find. The room was nice for an Inn Express, with a large desk and a chair high enough for office work, though it could use a safe. The front desk staff were the standout, very kind and supportive. Service elsewhere was okay. The typical English breakfast could have had more flavour, but there were also cereals, croissants, cakes, toast, sweet pastries and fruit.
