The Ferryboat

We missed our boat at fishgaurd last month and had nowhere to stay. The owner came in at midnight when he knew we had nowhere to go. The rooms were clean and up to date, and very cheap. He was lovely, and even dropped us down at the docks the next morning. My mother and I really appreciated it.

We loved the Peacock room, especially how spotless it was, and the beds and pillows were soft. There was tea and coffee in the room and a powerful shower too. Peter and Jacqui were welcoming and professional, happy to chat or give us space. We enjoyed the well-cooked full Welsh breakfast, and the shared lounge has a TV and an honesty bar. You can also pick up a copy of Jacqui's novel. They put real care into making this more than just a bed for the night. We had a wonderful stay and would happily recommend it and come back.

The owners are genuinely nice and clearly try hard to look after guests, but at £140 a night I didn't feel the room offered good value. Check-in was at 16:00 and checkout at 10:30, so the stay felt short for the price. The room was compact, the mattress too hard for us, and it was very warm with no fan. The low windowsill also meant we couldn't have privacy from the property across the road unless we lowered the blind and darkened the room. We mentioned some housekeeping problems to the owners, which in my opinion shouldn't have been there if the room had been cleaned properly; they listened to what I explained. Breakfast was okay, but no better or worse than places charging much less. The nearby railway meant train noise made a good night's sleep difficult. The terminal is convenient for a Stena ferry, about seven minutes on foot or a minute by car. Getting into Fishguard involves a 30-40 minute walk uphill, and our return took 40 minutes, mostly downhill. We couldn't get a taxi or Uber to pick us up for town. If you're looking for somewhere close to town without train noise, you'll need to find a different B&B.

We had a great breakfast with attentive, personal service, and the room was clean and quiet. The proprietor was especially helpful when we couldn't get a taxi to the start of our Coastal Trail walk. He drove us there himself, saving an hour of road walking on an already full day. We were very grateful for the effort. Many thanks.
