I've eaten at the restaurant twice and was disappointed both times. On my first visit, the breakfast item I ordered, half an English muffin with a slice of bacon, a sausage and half a tomato, isn't on the menu now. With a gluten free scone, two coffees and two orange juices, the bill came to just under £40, which I thought was ridiculous. We came back for lunch using a gift voucher. My wife liked the fish and chips, though the chips and mushy peas were over salted. At £21, I still thought it was steep. My Caesar salad had two pieces of lettuce, bacon shavings and seafood in the middle. I couldn't eat it because the fishy taste was so pungent. I usually eat almost anything, but suspect the seafood was frozen and tasted off. The side of mac and cheese was awful too, watery cheese sauce under a burnt cheese crust. My wife finished her plate before anyone checked on the food, while mine was still full. I also wanted the burger, but was told it would take 35 minutes. To me, this place has the looks without the substance. Service was poor to average, and the food disappointed on flavour, portion size for the price, and overall value. I didn't stay at the hotel.

We only ate at the Bonnie Badger and left at lunchtime. By 3pm I was extremely unwell. We were so looking forward to our stay, but it didn't feel worth what we paid. We originally booked one night on a voucher deal and extended to two. We arrived in awful stormy weather, and Phoebe kindly showed us to our deluxe room. At over £240 a night it was small, though it had all the amenities. My husband, who has never complained about a room before, was right that the bathroom was like an ice box: wind came straight through the single glazing and made it freezing. Phoebe, the nice manager, agreed and offered a superior room. We'd already unpacked, so said we'd wait. The wind eased and the bathroom became bearable. Our first dinner was disappointing. For a £29 seafood risotto described as a Scottish seafood selection, I expected more than two small prawns, one tiny piece of salmon and half a scallop. The young waitresses were friendly but didn't know which side the cutlery went on. Breakfast was very good, but we waited nearly ten minutes for the waitress to come in, apparently after smoking outside. Three tables remained uncleared throughout our breakfast.

I usually enjoy coming here, so I brought a friend today, travelling especially from Edinburgh for a quick lunch or even just coffee. When we arrived, they told us they weren't taking walk-ins. I visit regularly on weekends and have never encountered this before, so I asked if it was a new policy. There were several empty tables in the main dining room and it didn't look busy, but when I asked if they could fit us in, nothing was offered. I work in hospitality and found the whole thing surprising and disappointing. Staff should be better trained and change their attitude towards regular customers.

The broccoli tempura was the best part of the meal, and it was lovely. The rest of the food was fine, but similar to something from M&S's premium ready meal range. Service was very average too, especially for somewhere presented as a 5-star luxury place.

The atmosphere at the Bonnie Badger's Broc Bar was great, with friendly patrons, and it was nice to bring our dog along. Staff were friendly, attentive and gave excellent service. The food was brilliant too: my partner had fish and chips, while I had a pork dish with a side of mac & cheese that was sensational. We had a wonderful pub lunch and would love to visit again.
