The Riverside Hotel

Monmouth is a lovely town with plenty to see and do. There's a fuel station down the road, Lidl just over the river for cheaper food, and Waitrose opposite if money's no object. I stayed for one night on my way home from a work trip and got a very welcome room upgrade. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was clean and nicely kept. Staff were so friendly too. I arrived late and it was lovely to be greeted with a smile.

I loved the music playing in the afternoon and evening, and the couple were friendly. The rooms were very clean, and it was a fabulous place for my one-night stopover. I'd happily stay again. The only thing keeping it from five stars was how loudly the two corridor doors to the rooms bang as people come and go. Soft closers would make a big difference.

The takeaway and shop are just a minute's walk away, and the breakfast was absolutely spot on, great value too. I was here for work and found the staff really friendly, with free parking and a great location. The room was tidy and very clean, warm, and had a powerful shower. The bed, even the larger-than-usual single, and the pillows were so comfortable that I had the best night's sleep in ages. I'd pick this over a bigger hotel any day.

Twelve of us were here during a cycling trip across Wales, and the owner and team were helpful from the booking right through our stay. The rooms and food suited our needs well. It's just a couple of minutes over the bridge to the high street, and the price is great. This isn't somewhere for a fancy stay, but for a comfortable night or two with good service and value, it ticks all the boxes.
