Tintern Old Rectory

Tintern is beautiful, with several good pubs and a vineyard. The location also makes a great base for the Wye Valley, Forest of Dean, Chepstow and Monmouth, while Bristol and Cardiff are within easy reach. We stayed a week as a family of four with our dog in the two-bedroom suite. It had plenty of space, was clean and comfortable, and came with everything we needed, including a dog blanket, towels and treats. The main bedroom ran a little warm, but they provided a fan. The traditional, perhaps chintzy, decor isn’t my taste, though it was nicely done. Breakfasts were amazing. Recommended!

The owners made us feel right at home, and we even got to meet their dogs. There’s also a smoking terrace at the front, which smokers will love. This hotel would be my choice if I returned to Tintern, and I’d recommend considering it. It’s a lovely old building with the historic feel you hope for, and rooms are far more spacious than standard, enough to swing three or four cats, never mind one.

The climb up to the house is the one drawback, steep steps that would be tough for anyone with mobility issues. Otherwise, it’s a lovely, quirky little B&B with thoughtful touches, toiletries in the bathroom and flowers throughout. The host was so friendly and welcoming. I’m lactose intolerant, and she even gave me soya milk so I could have tea in my room. The Welsh breakfast was lovely, with local produce, freshly pressed juice, cereal, locally made jams and beautiful homemade bread.

We travelled with our 22-month-old son, and the owners had a portacot and high chair ready before we arrived, which made things easy. They’re lovely, and the rooms are cosy whether you book a single or family room. Breakfast was delicious, too.
