The front-of-house staff were friendly and helpful, but the stay at the alma inn was a real disappointment. We'd booked a superior room with a bath and weren't given that room, and they wouldn't change it. When my partner showered, water leaked into the pub downstairs. The food was the worst I've ever eaten. The lobster thermidor first came out cold and raw, then was still cold but rubbery, in a horrible slimy cheese and garlic sauce. I gave up in the end. Breakfast was absolutely terrible too, I've never been served anything so awful. Maybe this was once a good food pub, but it isn't now. Avoid it.

Last week we had really good fish and chips, a generous portion, friendly service, and a nice choice of beers. I've stayed here before too, and the rooms are great and the food is good. Tip: have a look at the board on the wall 🤗

On our first visit to Harwich, which is lovely, a local pointed us towards The Alma Inn for somewhere to eat. We're so glad he did. It's a historic pub with a great atmosphere, friendly staff and locals, and very good food. We both had fish and chips, mine was vegan, and they were beautifully cooked. The tartar sauce was something else. We enjoyed it enough that we're already thinking about coming back.

The historic interior is cosy, and there's a great choice of ales. Add welcoming staff and delicious food, including the best haddock and chips I can remember, and you've got a great pub. Looking forward to coming back. Recommended!

We're big fans of the Alma and have had lovely meals there before, but lunch today was a letdown. We both ordered grilled plaice and chips. The fish had very little flesh, and when I turned it over it looked as if it had been boiled. The chips were crunchy, overcooked, and a small portion. My wife was disappointed too. We're now reluctant to return.
