Hotel Mariners

The menu has plenty of variety, and the food is excellent. Staff were very friendly and happy to suggest places along the nearby coast. It was also nice to see and chat with regulars. Hotel Mariners is 400 years old, but you wouldn't know it from the clean, fresh, comfortable rooms. I'll be going back to Hotel Mariners.

The Christmas lunch table looked lovely, and the service was okay, though a bit slow. The food was disappointing. The plates and serving dishes were lukewarm, and by the time everyone had been served and could eat, the food was cold. The sprouts were soggy and seemed frozen, and the stuffing and gravy looked like they came from packets. The rest was bland and tasteless. The Christmas pudding was lovely, though. I'd be very unhappy if I'd booked and paid for this meal for guests.

We were lucky to get the last available spot in the small car park. Our room was a quiet, comfortable en-suite twin on the top floor, and both beds were comfortable. Breakfast was great, with cereal and pastries as well as a waiter taking your cooked breakfast order. Reception was okay, but they didn't give us information about where to eat nearby after 10pm.

Evening meals came out piping hot, with generous portions, and breakfast was very good. The staff were friendly and efficient, the rooms clean and comfortable, and the beer garden was lovely. It’s an old building, so the floorboards creak on every floor, but that wasn’t a problem for us. The stairs are steep and there’s no lift, so it’s not suitable for people with mobility problems. Apart from that, it’s a great hotel and I’d highly recommend it.
