The pub downstairs had a nice atmosphere and the shower was strong, but I regret booking this for a work trip. I was in a snug room in late April, pleasant-looking and compact, with more room around the bed than on the living room floor. The table was too high and the stool too low for using my laptop, so it wasn’t practical for work. The air conditioning didn’t work, and being on the top floor made the room warm. Opening the sash windows helped, but I then realised the snug rooms are above the beer garden, where music played until 11pm. I’m usually a pretty chilled sleeper, yet this was probably the worst hotel sleep I’ve had in years. I only got to sleep close to midnight, then woke around 6am to what I can only assume were the bins being moved, with bottles clattering. Even with the windows shut, I doubt the single glazing or the extra “triple glaze window” would have helped much. For a social visit it might be great, but I’d be very cautious about staying here for work. I’d have slept better at a Premier in for half the price. I’m glad it was a business expense, because at £130 a night without breakfast I’d have felt really let down paying personally. Two stars because the facilities, finish and location are good.

Breakfast was delicious and a generous size, and everyone we dealt with was friendly, polite, professional and attentive. That included the reception team when we arrived and checked out, the bar staff and the breakfast staff. Our room was lovely, with pretty decor and a really comfortable bed and pillows. It was very “snug,” and I liked being able to pick up extra tea, coffee or a bottle of water from the Butler room. We also got a warm greeting at reception and helpful directions to the car park. A beautiful hotel in a great central spot. We’d happily stay again when we visit Hertford.

We’d always wanted to stay here and finally did, and it didn’t disappoint. Our King room looked out over the Main Street and was very comfortable and quiet, so we slept really well. The bar was busy the evening before, but service was good and the atmosphere was excellent. Breakfast the next morning was eggs Benedict, very nice. We booked the night because we were feeling the January blues, and it was just the break we needed.

The building is beautiful and much bigger inside than it looks. We stopped for a late lunch before/after the theatre, and the lamb was delicious, the best I’ve had in a long time. Rhubarb and custard mess was a perfect finish. We’ll be back!

If you’re coeliac, please be aware. I’d eaten here twice before and knew they had a gluten free menu. On Saturday 21st February I ordered the Chicken snitzel, which I’d had before, and a chocolate Caramel Brownie. I was up all Saturday night and had been glutened. I wouldn’t usually post a review, but I emailed the Resteraunt on Sunday morning to tell them and didn’t hear anything back. That’s not good for coeliacs or for customer service. Update: at 10.07 this morning I received an email from the General Manager of the Salisbury Arms. No other emails had been sent to me, and I emailed you on Sunday morning. Please don’t make this worse by lying to me. I was glutened and won’t be returning.
