We had a really good holiday and would come back. Booked through Sykes cottages, the place was clean and comfortable, with everything we needed. There was also a garden on a veranda, looking out over a pleasant garden with a good variety of birds.

The welcome hamper was a real treat: a superb homemade cake, wine, chocolates, fresh orchard fruit, delicious homemade jam, plus essentials like milk and a fresh loaf. I only wish I had the cake recipe! Shippen Manger made a dream setting for celebrating a special birthday with my loving family. It’s tucked into beautiful Devon countryside, yet only about three miles from Axminster. The thatched roof and low beams give it traditional character, so watch your head, while the interior design and fittings are discreetly modern. It was everything I’d want from a country retreat, and I can’t recommend it enough.

The cottage was lovely, but the location was too remote for us. The lane to the property is very narrow and full of potholes. You really need a 4x4 to get there.
