Hathersage is close by, with plenty of nice places to eat, drink and shop, and there’s a garden plus an outdoor table for sunny weather. It’s a great spot overall. The cottage is on a working farm, so open windows may mean chickens or sheep wake you around 5am. That’s part of the setting, just something to know. The bedrooms are all spacious and nicely decorated. The main bedroom has its own bathroom; the only toilet and shower for the other rooms are downstairs, through the kitchen. There’s no bath for a long soak after a walk, though I’m happy with a shower. At night I found myself playing the little game of waiting as long as I could before needing the loo. I’d give it a fifth star if there were a shared bathroom upstairs. We were charged £2 for a cracked glass, and couldn’t prove whether the previous guests had left it that way. I was surprised to pay for a glass, but it wasn’t a big deal and doesn’t affect my rating of the property. One practical note: we spent quite a while looking for recycling points, then a local told us they’d all been removed and the nearest place was the recycling centre in Darley Dale, where you have to take your recycling yourself. When I’m writing this, the closest fast EV chargers are in Chesterfield and Meadowhall (Sheffield).
