After a long day out, it would have been nice to relax in the room without the steady extractor-fan drone and thump of music. We couldn't work out where the music was coming from, as there wasn't live music in the pub when we went down for a drink. Better soundproofing might help. The room had skylights, so there was no view, which was a shame, though we did enjoy the pub terrace. The suite itself was spacious, clean and comfortable, with a great bathroom and a very comfy bed. We missed having somewhere to set mugs by the sofa, and a little fridge would have made a big difference. At £200 a night, we'd expected it to be a restful place after hiking. Dinner on our first night was very well cooked and good quality, but the portions were much smaller than we're used to. Maybe that's just the way things are with prices these days. Breakfast was just as tasty, with good ingredients cooked well. A menu would have helped, and we were puzzled by the half a mushroom. The Barrel Inn is also really well placed for scenic walks.

The lemon pannacotta was a dream, with fruit, nuts, cake and sauce bringing lots of different flavours together. My husband enjoyed his blackberry and apple crumble too, though his little pot of custard was never going to satisfy his usual half-pint habit. We came for Sunday dinner to celebrate our anniversary and planned on three courses. I was torn by the varied starter menu: the scotch egg looked fantastic, and while my cannelone was good, I wished I'd ordered the egg. My husband loved the beef, and my pork was just as good. There was a decent helping of well-cooked veg and a huge Yorkshire pudding, nearly as good as my husband's, though not quite! The old pub is beautiful and traditional inside, and the views are spectacular. Expect to spend about £100 for a three-course meal for two with drinks. It's not the cheapest, but we thought it was worth it and would come back for another special occasion.

The Sausage with bubble and squeak was a great pick, and the food at The Barrel Inn was among the best we've had. We were staying nearby and our host's recommendation really paid off. Just a heads-up for anyone travelling with a dog: they don't allow dogs. It wasn't a problem for us, but it's useful to know. We'll definitely return.

Finally made it in for a proper meal today instead of just KP peanuts, and the food was every bit as good as the welcome. Really top stuff, with a lovely atmosphere and an experience that felt a step beyond a typical pub or inn while keeping all the warmth. The FOH are always friendly, even when a sweaty bloke in lycra, me, wanders into the formal dining area asking for water and snacks.

The view from the front was amazing, and the place had a lovely atmosphere even though it was busy. It wasn't too noisy, and the service was friendly, quick and efficient. The food we had here was hot and tasty. Our room was clean, lovely and very quiet. We had to leave before breakfast service the next day, but they arranged for someone to come in and serve us breakfast before we set off. The staff were helpful and friendly throughout. A great stay from start to finish.
