The pork belly and calf’s liver bon bons were lovely, but most of the rest of our meal was underwhelming. My wife’s cottage pie portion was tiny, with very little meat filling, and her carrots were so hard they could’ve been bullets. The wholegrain mustard mash with my pork had so much mustard that it tasted of vinegar. My bread and butter pudding was supposed to have orange zest and nutmeg, but tasted plain. I expect that dessert to have warm mixed-spice flavours, almost Christmassy, and this one was just boring. Service also felt pretty average. Nobody was impolite, but staff didn’t check in between courses or show much enthusiasm. Going out to eat is a treat when it’s so expensive everywhere, and the service should add to the experience. We tried the “Not Burns Night” menu because it sounded good and seemed decent value. The meal wasn’t a disaster, but the food was average at best. I’m giving it 3/5 because that middle rating feels fair. Better front-of-house service and some kitchen improvements could make it a 5/5.

We were only there for one night, since we had a funeral early Friday, but wished we could’ve stayed longer. Room 5 was very clean and nicely decorated, with a comfortable bed, tea and coffee, and lovely toiletries. The staff were friendly and efficient, and both dinner and breakfast were excellent. We hope to come back.

We hadn’t planned our Saturday lunch there, but I’m glad we went. It was quiet, the service was great, and the food was really tasty. I’d definitely recommend it and go back with my daughter.

We won’t be going back. Our family gathering at The Black Swan on Christmas Eve was ruined by the service and food. We’d requested the small function room, which we’d used many times, but were seated in the middle of the restaurant instead. We didn’t object, though we immediately felt in the way as staff rudely pushed past while we tried to settle a large group with young children. No one offered us drinks, and the food arrived before we’d had a chance to order for the two toddlers. When we raised it, we were told, “It’s not my fault.” The food was cold, over-seasoned, and below average. When we chose to leave, the bill was thrown on the table without an apology or any effort to put things right. Feedback got dismissive replies like, “I’m not the chef, that’s not my fault.” Emily was polite, friendly, and professional, and the only good part of our visit. I’ve never had such rude, unprofessional service.

From the outside the pub looks smart and posh, and the drinks were lovely. The food let us down, though. My ribs were dry and not very nice, with the sweetcorn the best part of my meal. My partner’s lasagne tasted as if it had been reheated from another day, which was a shame since we came specially on the last day of our holiday. The waitresses never asked how the food was and didn’t seem to notice we’d finished. We paid at the counter, and that put us off ordering dessert. I’d go here for an evening drink, but the food needs improving.
