That New Year’s Day pub lunch went on for nearly three hours for three courses, which gave us plenty of time to rethink our life choices. The service was slow the whole time, and with prices setting fairly high expectations, the food was a letdown. The £25 beef shin was especially disappointing, quite fatty and gristly. It could have been a lovely, relaxed way to start the year.

The food itself is lovely. I ordered pork belly with roast apple, but there was no apple on my plate. When I asked, I was told they’d run out, with no apology. We waited over 20 minutes for our plates to be cleared because we wanted to order dessert. I was told it wasn’t table service. If you’re going for the food, it’s lovely, but don’t expect service. I was almost waiting to be asked to clear my own table.

We’ve stopped here a few times, my wife and I, and really like the old pub. The staff are always welcoming and friendly, and the food has been lovely. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable too. I’ll definitely come back and stay again.

The rooms are small, but the space is laid out well. Staff really go above and beyond, and both dinner and breakfast were excellent.
