The location was handy for getting to other places. It’s next to a motorway, but we knew that when we booked, and with the window shut you can’t really hear it. The hotel has potential, but the rooms are dated and the beds were hard and uncomfortable. During our three-night stay, the bedding and towels were changed only once, and there was just one towel for two people. We asked for another and it arrived quickly. The shower pressure was poor, though the water temperature was good. Overall, it felt rather mid.
The rooms are nothing special, but they have what you need for a night, and the bathrooms had hand wash and shower gel. The Wi-Fi was pretty good and needed no password. There are USB ports by the beds, but no sockets there. If you need to plug in medical equipment, that could be a problem. We were offered an extension lead after the lovely bloke at reception checked every free room, but it wasn’t ideal. Check-in took a while because nobody was at reception for 15-20 minutes. Calling the hotel just disconnected every time, though we could call each other... hmm, suspicious haha! The place looks like it could serve meals, but there were no signs anything had been cooked recently. They offer a sort of continental breakfast, including cheese, but we didn’t fancy it. There’s a Toby Carvery not far away, and other cafes too, if it’s a day without “sun” in it. Parking was good, with lots of spaces to choose from, maybe too many for a poor decision maker! In proper heavy rain, the entrance floods, so watch your step. I didn’t. The water pressure from the shower was absolutely pants, just a dribble, while the taps were fine. The motorway is close enough to hear with the window open, but we didn’t find it too intrusive, and with the window closed we couldn’t hear a thing.
At 3 a.m., the roof leaked and the glass bathroom lamp fell off. It could have caused a very serious injury, making an already horrible stay even worse. The hotel only agreed to refund 20% of the cost despite these dangerous conditions, which I find completely unacceptable and disgusting. I believe a hotel safety inspector should review the place immediately. Its safety standards seem extremely poor and could put guests at risk.
Once we got to the rooms, they were better than expected, fairly clean and probably bigger than we needed, though the long maze-like corridors felt more like a B&B. The simple check-in was fine, and the staff were polite enough. But the rest of the stay was a disappointment. The name gives you a clue: OLD! The place looked nothing like the pictures, which seemed about 70 years old. When we arrived, the car park and the damp, musty, wet-dog smell set the tone. We’d hoped to start the weekend with a drink, but the bar had been closed for years. There was no food either, just crisps, protein bars and nuts at reception for £2.50 a pack or bar. They gave us directions to a pub and an Italian restaurant, but both were closed when we got there. We ended up finding a lovely meal and drink elsewhere by car. In the room, there were bottle tops on the floor, some sockets didn’t work in either room, and the other room’s fridge had expired dips left by the previous guest, lol. There was no hot water at the hand basin. I had an okay quick shower in the morning, but my husband and the person in the other room had no hot water for their showers. There was only enough hot water for one person. I would 100% never stay here again. Don’t trust the advertised photos or you’ll be disappointed.
There wasn’t a restaurant or bar, which had been mentioned on the website before I booked. I’d ordered breakfast, but it wasn’t on the hotel booking, so nothing was prepared. Apparently I was the only guest who wanted breakfast! The place felt like a typical conversion that had seen better days, and my room looked out over the motorway. It met my needs for one night, but I’d probably stay somewhere else next time.
