The waitress was kind and the ambience was beautiful, but communication about the Valentine's set menu was poor. We booked a table at Smokes and Embers after hearing good things and paid a £20 deposit. Nobody told us by email or phone that it would be a 12-course menu at £70 per person, with drinks extra. We only found out at the restaurant that the details had been posted on Facebook, which I don't use. We'd been looking forward to ordering from the normal menu, so the set menu of random dishes and very expensive steaks was a disappointment. Our 7.15pm booking had us there for two hours and we'd only finished four courses. At that pace, it would have been midnight before we could go home. The food was completely average, and the lobster risotto was undercooked. The brownie was the one good dish, though it's hard to mess up a brownie. The bill was £124 for a very unpleasant first experience. We won't come for an event, though might visit on a normal day for the usual menu. The waitress had to explain the set menu to other diners too. I just wish the restaurant had served normal food or communicated better.

John was exactly the sort of landlord you'd hope to meet: knowledgeable, friendly and a very capable chef. My friend and I tried breakfast at this lovely pub last weekend, and we found a real hidden gem. I had scrambled eggs, while Simon chose the full English. Nothing was too much trouble, and we both left saying we'd return. Well done to John and the Dog and Castle. Villagers should support this place, there's nowhere better locally. Can't wait to go back this weekend.

We had a great experience at the Dog & Castle this evening. The food was outstanding, with a creative range of vegan plates, many using locally foraged ingredients. As a vegan, I often find eating out tiresome because it's hard to find decent or different meals, but John served up a fabulous selection. The restaurant feels homely, welcoming and quirky in all the right ways. John and his team made everything top notch from the start, much like the award winning restaurant Dog in a Doublet for anyone who knows it. Highly recommended. We'll be back soon.

John and Della were kind and attentive hosts from start to finish, and even went the extra mile to provide a great toddler cot for our little girl. The rooms were perfect, with a giant, very comfortable bed. Such a lovely little getaway for our family of three.

The Dog and Castle has the sort of atmosphere where you can enjoy a quiet drink in a twinkle-lit room. The staff welcome you with a smile and your drink of choice, and Ellie deserves a special mention for keeping our glasses topped up. John clearly loves cooking, and the ingredients are top notch. The wagyu beef speaks for itself. Whether it's a comforting Mac ‘n’ Cheese, a great roast like you'd walk into at home, or the best burger you've tasted, the food is mouth watering. I'm working my way through the menu and keep wondering how he does it.
