Acorn Lodge

Andy and Karen, thanks for such a comfortable couple of days. We had a cosy room and your delicious breakfast set us up for the day. Looking forward to coming back later this year. See you then, Lynn & Stewart.

The four-poster bed was easily the best part of our stay, but there were several problems. The bathroom was extremely cramped, and the wallpaper looked dated. Getting to the room meant climbing four flights of stairs, with no lift. That should be made clear in the Acorn Lodge booking details, especially for anyone with mobility issues. We'd booked a four-poster double room for four days, Monday to Thursday at the end of July, after initially asking about five days, Monday to Friday, and being told only Monday through Thursday was available. On arrival Monday afternoon, the host asked for the full payment straight away and then gave us the key. Breakfast was another issue. The next morning, after going down a further flight of stairs to the dining area, a female staff member looked surprised and told us to help ourselves to toast, cereal and fruit juice. As I reached for cereal, the host appeared and asked, “Oh, you have changed your mind, have you?” I said breakfast was included in the paperwork we'd paid for. In front of the other guests, he kept saying we'd chosen the cheap option. I don't consider £312.50 cheap. He also said we'd probably find breakfast at Wetherspoons much cheaper. We were so shocked and disgusted by this that we left immediately and sat in the hallway. We went to Wetherspoons. Halfway through breakfast, the host called to apologise, saying he'd confused us with another guest. He offered to refund £10 for breakfast and asked if we'd like breakfast on Wednesday morning. We agreed. Anyone can make a mistake, so we felt he deserved another chance. But early Thursday morning, after we'd packed to check out by 10, he called at 9:30 to ask if we were coming down for breakfast. When I said we had to leave by 10, he told us we could stay until Friday. We'd been told the booking was Monday to Thursday and that we had to leave Thursday, so my partner and I were bewildered and just wanted to get out of “FAWLTY TOWERS LOL.” Check carefully what you're paying for, what's included, and which dates you've booked.

Andy, Karen and Betty, thank you so much for a marvellous week. You made the place feel friendly and lovely, like home, and were wonderful hosts. We had such a great stay!

The family were excellent hosts, and breakfast was great every day. Our room was very clean and cleaned daily. I'd have no hesitation recommending Acorn Lodge. Keep up the good work!
