We booked for the eTape Loch Ness. The apartment sits above the Co-op, between Fraser street and Church Street, and ours was on the first floor facing Church Street. We could see The Highlander, the karaoke bar and Perks coffee place across the street. Church Street has lots of restaurants and places to eat, but it’s lively and noisy, with people about. We could also hear neighbouring apartments on our floor and above. We were fairly relaxed and managed to sleep through some of the noise, but anyone who needs a quiet night will have to put up with it. The bedroom was a good size, with a double bed and two medium-firm pillows. They weren’t floppy, though I brought my own pillow anyway. There was a large window with a blackout blind, but its pull didn’t work and there weren’t enough slots on the side wall to hang it at different heights. The living room and kitchen were open plan and spacious, with a dining table and two chairs, though four could fit. It had free English tea bags, milk, a kettle, electric hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, sink and hob fan. The light was good, and there were two large windows with blinds whose pulls didn’t work. That was a bit annoying, but a small thing. The wooden floor and comfy two-seater Chesterfield sofa were nice. The bathroom was roomy, with a walk-in shower and a large overhead flat shower head. The pressure was great, it was easy to use, and the hot water tap responded well. All in all, it’s a good apartment if you don’t mind the street and neighbour noise.

The location was the one real plus, and the pub across the street, The Highlander, was wonderful. Getting in was confusing: there were no check-in details beyond a note on the outside door telling us to walk a couple of blocks to another address. We also got no parking directions. The rooms were tiny, with space for only two people to sit somewhat comfortably. The mattresses were extremely hard, though the bathroom was okay.

We left without staying and are still trying to get a full refund from booking.com, with no luck so far. The windows were wafer-thin, so outside noise came straight through. The hallway looked worn, and inside, the floor was grubby and the walls heavily marked. The toilet seat was broken, the bathroom sink drained very slowly, and there were holes in the walls. One radiator was hanging from a single bracket. The bedroom light switch had a bad repair, the clothes rail was broken, and the door also looked badly repaired. The sheets and pillows were stained, marked and looked dirty. This flat could be good with some care, but it isn’t getting any. It’s overpriced, and I’d avoid it.

We first got a small room that seemed fine, unpacked and went out for dinner. Then we found we couldn’t lock the bedroom door. I called the contact number, and a man came to try to fix it, but he couldn’t. He moved us to a bigger room with a sitting room and kitchen, so I unpacked again and we went out to eat. When we returned, I went to make tea and coffee and found the kitchen filthy. The dishwasher was full of dirty dishes and smelled terrible, so I turned it on. The fridge, oven and microwave were in the same state, and the whole kitchen needed a proper clean. The bedspread at the foot of the bed was badly stained. The noise was what you’d expect for the location.

At first the room seemed nice, but the bed was so warped that I rolled off when I moved. The sink barely worked, and the toilet needed a few flushes. I had to clear old mince and other things out of the fridge, and the broken blinds wouldn’t stay up. I had to jam one into the open window to hold it there. I won’t be staying again.
