The Square Hotel

Went in today, 7th Feb 26, with my mate. Superb food, great staff and excellent beer. Nice place and atmosphere. Definitely see you soon.

The service was a real highlight, our waitress was warm and helpful despite how busy the pub was with rugby on. We had a quiet table in the back dining room, which was lovely. The steak pie came with creamy mash and mixed vegetables, all excellent, and I especially liked the shortcrust pastry for a change from puff. We started with ham hock and cheese croquettes, crisp and cooked just right. I stopped for dinner after travelling from the Lonach Highland gathering. It was a special one-off day, and sadly I won't be able to return easily.

The rooms were clean, and the staff were friendly, though they didn't seem very well trained. Check-in was delayed until 4pm, but they were somewhat flexible when we asked. Sleep was the main problem: the mattresses were very thin, and loud music from the pub downstairs carried up. There was no WiFi during my visit either. If you need a peaceful night, this probably isn't the place.

The atmosphere was amazing, and the hotel was spotless and very warm. Staff were really friendly, and the price was reasonable. I tried the cheese and bacon burger and loved it, though the bottom bun had a strong balsamic taste, probably from a sauce. There wasn't any breakfast, unfortunately.
