The owner was friendly and helpful, which mattered a lot when our car broke down on Hogmanay and we were stranded for an extra two days. They also posted back the old phone my son left behind. We'd definitely recommend the place and would return. We booked at the last minute for a few days over Hogmanay, and the price seemed very reasonable for that time of year compared with other places. My room was clean and spacious, with a great view over the back garden and bay. The bed was comfortable, the curtains blocked the light well, and both the room and lounge were warm and cosy. We could turn down the radiators to suit ourselves. There's also a guest lounge and dining area with a table. Breakfast isn't served, but the rooms have tea and coffee facilities, with packaged croissants, biscuits and porridge pots available. Some were gluten-free, which was great for me. A shared fridge was useful for keeping fresh milk and food for picnics and snacks. Bring a little washing-up liquid if you want to wash mugs and cutlery in your room sink. It's a quiet spot away from the main road traffic, yet only a 5-10 minute walk from Portree town centre. One morning we had a lovely cooked breakfast at the Royal Hotel, where a kind lady let me try out my basic Gaelic.
The annex was tucked into a quiet corner, so it felt private, though the main shopping and restaurant area in Portree was only a ten-minute walk away. There's a slightly hilly walk up from the main road, which could be hard with heavy bags. I booked a single, but my room was spacious, with two separate twin beds, and the wifi worked fine. It was very clean and comfortable, with a lovely view of the garden and port. Breakfast isn't provided, but there's a kettle, plus packaged croissants, biscuits and breakfast granola. You can make yourself a hot coffee, cocoa or tea whenever you like. I look forward to staying here again on my next visit to Portree.
The shower was awful, just a water tank fixed to the wall. It swung between scalding hot and ice cold, leaving only about five seconds to rinse between temperature changes. The bathroom was so cramped my feet touched the wall when I sat on the toilet, there was nowhere for personal items except the windowsill, and I could touch the ceiling with my fingers. The bedroom had children's furniture and a tiny table covered with kitchen drawer liner. Dead plants were everywhere, and the “carpet” was the underlay that goes down before the actual carpet. The view of the water lasted only about two hours, depending on the tide. At US$150 a night, it was outrageous. We went to a beautiful hotel afterward and paid the same, with a lovely breakfast included. Our stay was absolutely horrendous. All the rave reviews must have been written by the owners. This was a total rip-off, a scam. Meadow Bank House. Is there a rating below zero? Definitely not a four-star hotel.
Our four days at Meadowbank were enjoyable, even with a couple of shortcomings. The rooms were comfortable, and it's just a short walk from everything in Portree. We knew breakfast wasn't offered, ironic for a B+B, but expected to have use of the kitchen and found it wasn't available to guests.
The room was spotless and comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. Peter & Elaine were delightful hosts, too. You get a spectacular view from this quiet little spot, with free parking and the shops and restaurants in Portree still within walking distance. I’d happily recommend it.
