We like the properties and their locations, and this is our third stay with the Sonas hotel group. The hotels Skeabost and Knipock have plenty of charm, lovely sitting areas with wood-burning fireplaces, nicely appointed rooms, comfortable beds, excellent bathrooms, robes, Nespresso machines and a small fridge. The service was okay, but dining fell well short of four-star quality. The restaurants served what seemed to be precooked banquet meals from set menus, with familiar plates and the same vegetables arranged in a few variations, without much thought to how they went with the main protein. I asked for my duck breast medium-rare, but it arrived far too quickly to have been cooked to order. The fat under the skin needs time to render, and the meat was dry, reheated and medium. Its colour made it obvious to me that it wasn't cooked to order. The chef's shortcuts, prioritizing speed over quality, were easy to see. Instead of the thin slices of juicy duck breast with crisp skin I expected, I got big, thick lobes of faded pink meat. The vegetables were the same as those served with my wife's overcooked salmon. The scallop starter had been smoked under one of those gimmicky domes, which ruined it. The menu didn't mention that, perhaps with leek ash, and it felt like an amateur oversight for such a distinctive dish. We had a similar experience at the Knipoch near Oban. Sonas gets one more chance to redeem itself, then we're done. It's a shame the food doesn't live up to the properties and locations we like.

The breakfast comes with the stay and it's delicious. The showers were incredible, and we got the best sleep of our trip in those beds. The pillows get an A++. This is easily our favourite hotel. It doesn't get better than this place.

We chose Skeabost for our wedding reception and accommodation for ourselves and our guests, and the hotel made everyone feel so special. Oskar, the wedding planner, was excellent and incredibly organized, making everything run smoothly. The staff and service were top notch. Pricing was fair, reasonable and transparent. The breakfast spread was amazing, with cold options and freshly made hot food. I still think about the bread and juices. The grounds are gorgeous, and the location is perfectly placed in the middle of Skye. We even took a quick morning dip in the water and enjoyed the view. What an incredible experience.

We had a very spacious and comfortable deluxe room, with a traditional bathroom that was spacious too. The complimentary toiletries were Arran and smelled amazing. The restaurant food really made our stay: the starters, mains and dessert were all delicious. The hotel was very friendly and welcoming.

We only had time for one night, and wished we could have stayed longer. The grounds and sitting areas are gorgeous, and we enjoyed a walk beside the river that meanders by the hotel. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and our evening meal was beautifully presented and delicious. Breakfast was done really well, with the cold selections you'd expect and a hot dish of your choice. We also had some of the best flat white coffees we've tried in Scotland. It's a magnificent old building, with spacious, lovely-looking rooms that seem newly decorated and a great shower. There's no lift or mini fridge, but tea and coffee are provided in the room. The stay felt like a real experience, and I'd especially recommend it to Australians like us who can't get this kind of heritage stay at home.
