We stayed two nights as four people, and the room was small, with two bunk beds facing each other and just a narrow passage between them. That was fine for us since we were out exploring Isle of Skye and only used the room to sleep. The bunkhouse was clean and tidy, with a shared kitchen, complimentary tea and coffee, and a fridge for perishable food. Pam was lovely and shared interesting local facts and recommendations for places to visit and eat, which we really enjoyed. It’s a remote spot: there are no shops in the village, though there is a cake and coffee place. It sits right by the lake, with sheep and cow herds nearby. Good value, and I’d recommend it, especially if you have a car.

We found the bunkhouse clean, and the other guests were considerate and friendly. Nobody left dirty dishes out, and it stayed quiet after 11pm. The communal areas have good wifi, though phone signal is poor in this part of Skye, so it’s worth taking a screenshot of the door codes. Check-in without contact was easy. Pam, the manager, was lovely to meet both mornings, and we enjoyed chatting with her. We were also pleased to learn that Highlife, the charity running the bunkhouse, helps fund the rangers. The converted schoolhouse feels airy and comfortable, with high ceilings and large windows. It’s functional rather than luxurious, but very clean and well equipped. The views over Loch Slappin and the Cuillin mountains are outstanding. There’s ample parking, which is useful since it’s out of the way for exploring the rest of the island. Torrin Pools, a small taste of the Fairy Pools, are just a 4 minutes walk up the road; the Fairy Pools themselves are an hours drive on the other side of the mountains. The kitchen has two oven/stoves, two kettles, plenty of cookware, and free tea and coffee. There are long tables for meals, plus maps, books, and games. Our room had two bunkbeds, two chairs, and a small Edinburgh press for shelves. A button turns on an hour of heat, which works well, though the building wasn’t cold. The large windows open, and the curtains are thick. The mattresses are the usual plastic-covered kind, but we found them comfortable enough after full days hiking and exploring. There’s also a firepit out back, which we didn’t use this time.

The hostel has everything you need, in a practical, functional way. If you want to disappear into Skye’s landscapes with only sheep, cows, and moorland around, this is the place. The drive to nearby Elgol is incredible, don’t miss it. Thanks to Pam for the warm welcome and advice. We’ll be back 😊🌿

This is a private building, not a free campsite. Some websites have listed it incorrectly as a free campsite. Please don’t camp or use the facilities without a paid booking. It’s run by a local charity to support nature and communities, and it isn’t a bothy either. Anyone wild camping should follow the outdoor access code, camp responsibly, and stay well away from buildings and villages. Thank-you. (2023)

What a magical place. The hostel has a big kitchen with plenty of chairs around two large tables. There are 5 apartments, two rooms with showers, and a dry room. Our apartment just had beds, with no wardrobe.
