We ended up staying overnight after a delicious lunch, including traditional Scottish cullen skink. The proprietor couple were friendly and accommodating, and we enjoyed chatting with Giacomo. He made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. They even washed our very smelly laundry, and the room was comfortable. I also enjoyed the Old Speckled Hen real ale. My fish and chips at dinner were a bit disappointing, though my wife much enjoyed her dish. Breakfast was a very tasty full cooked one with lots of options, and the stay was excellent value, a perfect end to our trek. We’d stopped in for our complimentary half-pint of very ordinary lager and our certificates, and met two fellow Pennine Way trekkers.

A real gem of a hotel. We were looked after so well, and the welcome and service were 10/10. The meal was outstanding, especially the best steak and ale pie I’ve had. The portions are huge and great value.

We were worn out after a day hiking St Cuthbert’s Way, but the proprietor was friendly and chatty and made us feel at home. After a bit of persuasion, we settled in the darts room for a few games and had a lovely evening. The host and staff were wonderful, and the beer and food were good. Fantastic experience, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend spending an evening here, especially after a long day of walking.

I’m glad we took the advice to stop here for lunch during our cycling trip. The fresh food was delicious and fairly priced. My family enjoyed chatting with the owner while we ate, and he gave us some great ideas for future trips. 10/10.
