The lamb I had and the venison my in-laws ordered were cooked exquisitely, and the wine selection was excellent. Fine coffee rounded off the meal. We had the three course menu and are already planning to return for the 6-course tasting menu. It was re-opening night under new ownership, and our party of four was looked after beautifully. We didn’t feel rushed and could take our time over a really good dinner. We’re fairly new to the area, and between lockdowns and the kids, we hadn’t had a proper night out for a good meal in a while. I’m so glad we went to The Cross, which had been personally recommended as a local restaurant. There looked to be a good selection of malts too, but I was driving, so I’ll have to try them another time. We’ll be back soon.

We booked ahead for our anniversary dinner, and the family running the place were so kind. They adjusted the menu for our strict dietary restrictions, and everything was prepared with real skill. The food and drinks were perfect, and the chef does amazing work. The room was cosy, with a fireplace and art. We’d definitely come again.

The restaurant was the main draw for us, and we had dinner there on both nights. We were very pleased, and I think it lives up to its reputation. The hotel seems to be family run, with a charming and ambitious feel. It sits a little away from the main road among trees, with a creek running behind the house. Our room was spacious, clean and tastefully decorated, and the window looked right down to the creek, which was beautiful and relaxing. We visited on a private tour of Scotland in June 2015 and loved the place. I’d give it four honest stars.

Our meals were second to none, and left us with lovely memories of food, friends and fun. During our three nights at the Cross, Joe and Sarah welcomed us warmly and clearly knew their craft. The atmosphere was immensely charming, and the rooms were very comfortable. We’ll make a point of coming back to the Cross on our next trip to Scotland.

The food is of a very high standard, and special diets were handled easily. In my case, the chef prepared a gluten- and dairy-free menu, so I didn’t feel I missed out. Service was excellent and had the personal touch you want from a top-notch small hotel. The rooms are a good size and well equipped, and so are the bathrooms. I’d especially recommend the ones overlooking the river, where the sound of the water makes for a restful night. The hotel and restaurant are small, and while the building looks unassuming outside, it’s beautifully decorated within. There’s a lovely restaurant and lounge on the ground floor, with the residents’ lounge and bedrooms above.
