It was cosy and warm despite the cold, and I’d come back without hesitation. My short stay in the r Garret was lovely. The staff were so polite and welcoming, and the food was outstanding with generous portions, so you won’t go hungry. The building is old, but they’re looking after it. There had been some decorating on the day I arrived. The rooms were clean and tidy, a little dated but quaint and in keeping with the place. Breakfast had all my favourites: black pudding, tattie scones and haggis. Kudos to Shona, she’s so lovely.

The huge bowl of soup and peppercorn sauce was an unexpected treat, especially since I’d asked for it even though it wasn’t on the menu and hadn’t expected such a big serving. The meal was delicious. Everything was freshly made, very tasty and served in large portions, all in a really friendly atmosphere.

The portions were fantastic, and the meal was very, very good. We ate in the bar area and got first-rate service. The one thing to mention is the wait: it took over an hour for our food to arrive, and by then both grandchildren were falling asleep. I’d still highly recommend it to families looking for somewhere to eat with first-rate service.

We’ve spent the last two weeks trying all the festive menus in Kirkcudbright, and The Garret was easily the best for quality, amount, taste and value for money. Five stars for the chef and staff. Alan & Shirley.

Dinner was delicious, but you need to book, and breakfast was good too. The location is good and the staff are friendly. A couple of things to know: there are no downstairs rooms if you have mobility issues, and you might have to park a little way down the road, though not far.
