The location, parking, staff and breakfast were the good parts. We started in room 101A, where a long, narrow, winding corridor led to a space barely bigger than the bed. There was nowhere for cases or to sit. Staff said it was one of the new rooms. They moved us when we asked, to room 207, which they described as a more traditional layout, but an old room still waiting to be refurbished. Both room types cost the same, which seems ridiculous. The second room was larger and suited us better, but the problems kept coming: the toilet took ten minutes to refill and still wouldn’t flush properly, the shower pressure was so weak we could barely get our heads wet, and the TV couldn’t get a clear enough signal on any channel. The bed was so old and soft that we kept rolling together in the middle, and we’re not big people. The building’s age doesn’t excuse selling rooms in that condition, especially at such exorbitant prices. When we left, there was nobody at reception, just a key box, and there wasn’t a phone in the room. We couldn’t wait to leave. This was the worst stay anywhere we’ve booked worldwide.

Breakfast was very good and the location was great. The room was okay and the bed comfortable, but there was no Wi-Fi this time. I had to ask to change rooms, and there wasn’t even a bottle of water in the room. Overpriced.

The food was the bright spot: breakfast was good and filling, and the Fish Curry was wonderful. My husband loved his pan fried haddock with capers and stacked potatoes. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. But the rooms were a letdown. Ours was up the stairs and down a bare, musty hallway that felt like a maze. As soon as we opened the door, we got a strong whiff of mold, and we had to stay there for two nights. The carpet and curtains were nasty, and the bathroom was very tiny and old. Our tour company booked it for us, and we were hugely disappointed.

It was a large, old room with loads of space, which I suppose helps explain the high price. The place felt clean, safe and comfortable, and the location was great. My only complaint was the very weak shower pressure from the on demand water heater. I stayed somewhere else afterward with the same kind of heater and good pressure, so it isn’t just how those heaters are.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, the staff friendly and efficient, and both breakfast and dinner were nice. There was also a wide choice of scotch whiskey. The decor felt like it was from the early 1900s, and the hotel is close to St Magnus Cathedral. We had a very pleasant stay.
