The Geese and Fountain

The breakfast is first class. It’s a friendly country pub with rooms, a good wine list and an extensive menu. The landlord is keen on real ale, and there’s also a wide range of craft beer in cans, bottles and on keg. Motorhome and campervan owners can stay overnight in the car park, whether or not they eat at the pub.

Staying overnight in the pub car park worked perfectly for a stopover. It’s a gorgeous village to explore, with lovely dog walks, including one with a view of Belvoir Castle. The salmon and couscous dinner was lovely, and my husband’s pie and chips came with the best part of the meal, those goose fat fried chips.

Those mini chorizos are the best anywhere, so make sure you try them. I’ve been twice and the food was outstanding both times. The chef is happy to customise a meal for dietary requirements, and nothing seems too much trouble. Prices are reasonable too. My only regret is that I didn’t have room for dessert.

The staff were friendly, and the pub was very quiet when we came for a birthday meal. Even though we were the first ones in and there were only three of us, the food took a while to arrive. The main course was an odd combination, duck with roast potatoes and peppers, and not one I’d choose. Dessert was more disappointing: the cheesecake may have been turning, and the £6 chocolate shot was hardly a dessert. We won’t be back.
