During our stay in the Covid-19 pandemic, the outside of this pub with rooms was dirty and the inside wasn't very clean either. The tea and coffee in the bedroom had gone black and solid, as if it hadn't been changed for weeks. The soft furnishings were new and modern, but the carpet and bathroom weren't. Avoid it for a drink or an overnight stay.

The beer was cheap, and Alex behind the bar was lovely. It's a nice, traditional old pub, and the room was clean and functional. But the bed felt like a board, it was awful to sleep on. For £45 a night, you can't expect much.

The TV didn't work, and the whole place needs renovating. The Brecon Beacons are flatter than the bathroom floor. Ignore the good reviews and believe the bad ones, you won't be disappointed. The cleaner's vacuum even has mud flaps attached. One star is too much for this hotel, which felt like a bail hostel. Avoid at all costs.

I thought breakfast was included after reading earlier reviews, but it wasn't. We had to walk down the road to Granny's Cafe, where breakfast was excellent, adding another £17 to the £70 cost of a one night stay. My feelings about The Castle Hotel are mixed. Room 7 was acceptable, with clean sheets and towels, a TV and free WIFI. The bathroom was a different story. The towel rail was hanging off the wall and couldn't be used, the toilet roll holder was barely attached, and there was black mold around the shower base. Water collected in front of the sink after using the toilet and sink, though I couldn't tell if it came from the sink, waste or macerator. The curtain was held up with string, so a proper net curtain wire and a coat hook on the bathroom door would help. The owners could have used lockdown to take care of simple, cheap maintenance.

This is the most disgusting hotel I've ever been in. The bedroom carpet hadn't been vacuumed, there was someone's old toothbrush on top of the wardrobe, and the drawers hadn't been emptied. The TV was so old it felt like an antique, and the picture was green. The toilet was revolting and the shower filthy, with the glass door not even on its runner. There was so much product down the toilet that flushing nearly made it come over the rim. I was afraid to stand on the floor in case I went through it. Stay away from this hotel at all costs.
