Right in the middle of Bentham High Street. Friends came to stay for my birthday, and we joined them for breakfast the next morning, which was lovely. We had dinner too, and the food was good. The barman was spot on and always knew whose turn it was. The woman cooking and serving, while apparently doing all sorts of other jobs as well, couldn’t have been more helpful. I’d recommend it and will be back.

I was here on Thursday because I had a wedding in Wennington the next day. It was incredibly good value. The room was clean, well equipped and tastefully decorated, with a country feel and a lovely new bathroom. The staff were lovely, especially Katie, who was making breakfast. There’s parking at the back and a shop across the road, so the basics are close by. Wennington Hall is only a 10-minute drive away, which made it ideal for an event there. Honestly, it feels like you’re undercharging. I’d have gladly paid another £20-30 a night.

Always a friendly welcome, and the food’s good too. They make some of the best burgers I’ve had in the area, and they’re really dog friendly.

The Black Bull is at a road junction, but I didn’t hear anything from outside and slept perfectly, even though I’m a very light sleeper. The staff were pleasant and helpful, the place was very clean, and breakfast was a generous full English.

It feels like a proper, unpretentious local pub, with a pool table and sports on TV. There’s a woodburning stove and the staff are friendly. They actually have a gluten-free menu, rather than just claiming to, and my gluten-free halloumi was nice. It seems good value. I’m not much of a pub person, but I like to support places that make an effort with their menu. Seems popular with locals too.
