The barn and its setting suited our two families, and the owner kindly let our group of six check in early for our midweek October stay. The fruit trees along the approach, with all those different apples, pears and plums, are a lovely touch and likely part of the conservation work. It’s also handy for exploring the area. Inside, the layout worked fine, though we spent our evenings around the kitchen table playing games instead of using the upstairs lounge. There are some real drawbacks. The busy road is hidden from view, but the traffic noise outside is intrusive and makes it hard to relax. The cleaning also needed attention: the kitchen bins hadn’t been emptied, we washed the crockery and glasses before using them, and the oven trays were greasy. Carpets looked dirty around the edges, with dead spiders and webs left in room corners. We expect some nature in a countryside property, but it should be clean when guests arrive. The mattresses have sagged so much that we rolled toward the middle. I also got the duvet whose filling had clumped together, though the other duvets were fine. We didn’t hear from the owner at all, and would have expected a call or message to check everything was okay after we arrived. Still, we’d stay again and recommend it, as long as you know about these limitations.

We’re very sorry the property wasn’t cleaned properly when Mr Russell arrived. That was an unusual problem for us, and we appreciate the feedback. Our Gold Award property has received excellent reviews over many years and has consistently scored five for cleanliness, so this was a clear slip-up. We’re glad he would still consider coming back. Sorry again.

Hilltop Cottage is a peaceful place to stay, with a comfortable double bed, lovely bedding, reading lights, chairs and a small corner table in the bedroom. There’s plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space too. Outside, you get garden chairs, a table, wide views across the garden and even a shed. The cottage is a converted barn for two, with a roomy living area, a well-equipped kitchen and a bathroom with a bath and a good-pressure overhead shower. I’d add an extractor fan to the bathroom if I could. The kitchen has a fridge, freezer, fan oven, full cutlery and crockery, and a washing machine. The rural setting is lovely, while nearby roads make getting around easy. There’s also a good local shop within walking distance, plus a village pub serving basic meals. One small snag: although towels were listed as provided, there weren’t any at check-in. I had to call the owner, Charles, and was told they could take up to an hour. They did arrive, and Charles apologised and checked that I was happy with everything else. He also kindly brought a sun lounger, though the weather meant I didn’t get much use from it. I was very pleased with the accommodation.

A week disappeared far too quickly here. It was so quiet and relaxing, with nobody bothering you, and I loved having tea at the garden table each morning while taking in the lovely views and countryside. I wish I’d booked longer. I’m thinking of returning next year to the barn with friends and family, probably for two weeks.

A lovely clean house in beautiful countryside. The furniture was comfortable and the kitchen had plenty of utensils. The owners encourage you to get out and explore, too. I can’t recommend this holiday let enough!
